Nowadays, it refers to anything including plastic that is manufactured by the process of polymerization which involves the use of polyvinyl chloride. Such a product is technically termed ‘polymer’ which is “a univalent chemical radical derived from ethylene”. In simple words, a polymer is a “naturally occurring or synthetic compound consisting of large molecules made up of a linked series of repeated simple monomers”. It is a chemical compound – “a substance formed by chemical union of two or more elements or ingredients in definite proportion by weight”.
‘Univalent’ or ‘monovalent’ in chemistry connotes any compound having a valence of one. ‘Valence’ points to two processes, viz., the typical phenomenon of forming chemical bonds, as well as this combining power given in terms of the number of hydrogen atoms (or the equivalent)”.
A radical is formed when two or more atoms are bound together as a single unit to form a part of a molecule. It can also be “an atom or group of atoms with at least one unpaired electron”.
